Developing age-appropriate independence

If your child is a preteen, you are probably seeing their developing desire for independence. You might hear “I can do it myself,” see the door to their bedroom closed more often, or notice conversations becoming more one-sided (yours). They’re also becoming more aware of their place in the world. Preteens are building individuality as they try out new styles, friends, and interests.

Coaching for this age group often gives the child more space to participate directly, while caregivers remain closely involved. You’ll work with your child and their coach to help them put words to feelings, accountability to behaviors, and independence to daily life.

At this stage, you are still your child’s emotional anchor. The safety and vulnerability you model shows them how to manage their own feelings and actions.

Coaching gives you practical strategies that you can start using right away. It helps you stay connected without taking over — listening more, fixing less, and offering steady support as your child learns self-reliance.
