What to expect from coaching at BrightLife Kids

Taking the first step toward something you've never done before can make you feel both relieved and uncertain. You've got practical questions — like what actually happens in a coaching session, how much time it takes, and what you can expect along the way. We've got simple, helpful answers.

What happens during coaching

What coaching sessions are like:

  • 25-30 minutes long

  • Online via Zoom

  • Every week to start

Early on, you and your coach will:

  • Learn about each other and build trust

  • Get clear on what’s feeling hardest right now

  • Set goals that feel realistic and meaningful

  • Create a shared plan for how coaching will support your family

Over time, sessions focus on:

  • Learning and practicing tools you can use at home

  • Checking in on what’s working and what needs adjusting

  • Building confidence as you address challenges together

Progress looks different for every family. As the weeks go by, you and your child will start to feel steadier. You'll be able to communicate in clear ways, understand behaviors, and lean on healthy coping techniques. You'll celebrate small wins and keep working towards your goals with the ongoing support of your coach.

Your involvement is essential

Coaching at BrightLife Kids is designed with the understanding that you are a key part of your child's change, especially with younger kids. This doesn’t mean pressure or blame. It means:

  • Parents are supported, not judged

  • Coaching focuses on the way your family learns and responds

  • Tools are designed to fit your real life, not one that feels "perfect"

  • Your goals, your values, and your culture all matter

How coaching helps you and your child

Behavioral health coaching is what's known as preventive. It's an early intervention, a way to support a concern before it grows into a bigger issue. It's sort of like when you bring in a tutor for your child before that math grade slips from a C to D- or how learning and practicing the right form for lifting weights gives you a better chance of avoiding an injury. This kind of coaching is for your and your child's feelings, emotions, behaviors, and communication. Coaching helps you and your whole family build everyday skills and approaches to help you navigate common, everyday concerns like:

Through behavioral health coaching, you gain practical tools, grow confidence, and create positive patterns at home that support your child’s emotional growth.

And if you're not sure what kind of support your child needs right now, our coaches and coach specialists are here to help with that, too. They’re trained to carefully listen, ask the right questions, and determine what's best for your child.

If coaching is the right level of support, you'll be able to get started right away. And if a different level or type of care will be a better fit, they'll explain and get you connected to the right resources in your community. It's all included in what we do for families for free.

Babies and toddlers

Parent coaching focuses on how you're feeling along with how your baby is doing with your support. Topics include big feelings, daily routines, early development, and separation anxiety.

Preschoolers

Common topics of conversation include big emotions and behaviors, sleep and nutrition, attention, and understanding boundaries both at home and at preschool or daycare.

School-age kids and preteens

Many caregivers with kids at this age and stage focus on healthy communication and behaviors, prepuberty, moods, focus and attention, screen time, and worries.

Ongoing support

As your child's skills develop, you may want the option of checking in over time to monitor their progress, address unexpected challenges, and adjust support as your child grows.

What to expect FAQs

Can I choose my coach?

Finding the right fit matters. And our goal is to make coaching feel safe, supportive, and effective for your family. Based on what you tell us, we'll offer a selection of coaches with experience in areas that will be helpful for your child. You’ll choose one and typically work with that same coach each session to build comfort and trust. If you have a coach preference (like gender), please let us know. We’ll honor your preferences whenever possible, based on availability. If your coach doesn’t feel like the right match, you can request a change.

Is coaching confidential?

Absolutely. Your privacy is important to us. All coaching sessions are confidential and never shared with schools, employers, or government agencies. All of our coaches are trained in HIPAA policies, and we use encrypted systems and secure technology to protect your data. Learn more about how we keep your information safe.

Is coaching really free?

Yes! All BrightLife Kids coaching is completely free for California families. The state of California covers 100% of the cost of this program, which means if you have a California zip code and a child ages 0–12, you get coaching and every resource we have to offer for free.

Does coaching work?

Yes! In fact, 99% of BrightLife Kids families report being satisfied with their care. That said, every family is unique — and so is every coaching journey. Your experience and results depend on what your coach does, yes. But it also depends on you and your child. You're a big part of setting the right goals, communicating your family's needs, and practicing what you and your child are learning at home. Many families notice meaningful progress within 8–10 sessions. Confidence levels skyrocket as caregivers and kids see their new approaches working at home (even when things aren't perfect).
