CA DHCS 2025 Impact Report:
Meeting the behavioral health needs of California's children and familiesBy BrightLife Kids Team
Our quick-read guide is written especially for parents of neurodiverse kids. It’s meant to help caregivers apply our weekly blog topic in a different way, one that works for their child’s unique brain.

Kids are more likely to talk to you about scary things online if they don’t feel like they’re in trouble. The same goes for worries they have about bullying or other things that make them nervous about heading back to school.
Whether it’s a calm check-in about what they may have seen online, or a practice visit to the school before the first day, these small moments still work if your child thinks or processes information differently — they just work best with a little extra structure.
Here’s how to apply any of it in three steps.
Notice how your child naturally reacts to screens, conversations, and new routines. Do they need extra time to answer your questions? Do they respond better to pictures than to talking? Do they like to ease into new situations and environments over time?
Shape your approach to fit that style. Use fewer words, more visuals, or shorter check-ins than you might otherwise. Ask if being online gets a thumbs up or thumbs down lately. Walk or drive by school and point it out. Take them to play on the playground so it gets familiar. You can also set up a casual chat with their new teacher before they’re focused on the whole classroom. A familiar face on day one feels good.
Come back to the same habit or conversation often, in the same simple way. Repetition builds comfort and trust.
Observe. Adjust. Repeat. Use it for check-ins about online safety, noticing signs of bullying, or easing back-to-school worries. One small step at a time in a no-pressure environment feels easier. Finding the classroom, the bathroom, the gym — it starts with one small win and eventually adds up to confidence.
Need a little more preparation before the school year starts? That’s what we’re here for.
