Growing pains aren’t always physical

Making friends, staying organized, and speaking up all take a lot of practice. Some kids have a hard time communicating or catching social cues. Others are great with friends but can’t seem to stay caught up in class.

Handling conflict, reading facial expressions, and understanding nuance aren’t easy things to do. Especially in a digital world. These skills don’t always come naturally for kids. But they can be developed with guidance and support.

Emotional skills

A core part of emotional development for kids is recognizing and understanding their feelings. Learning how to name feelings, calm their bodies, and have empathy for others are important. Not just for their own growth, but for their ability to make and keep friends.

When these things are a struggle for a child, it’s not necessarily defiance. It might be skill gaps — things they need to learn. Emotional skills don’t always come naturally, but they can be modeled, taught, and practiced.

Organizational skills

Relying on a schedule or routine can actually feel calming for kids, not restrictive. Part of that routine can be staying organized. Little steps make a big difference and lead to even bigger wins.

Like laying the next day’s clothes out before bed. Packing the backpack and organizing homework. Putting stuffed animals away. Finishing tasks and keeping track of art or school supplies. A little framework goes a long way. We can help you build one that grows along with your child’s skills.

School avoidance

Sometimes going to school feels too hard. This is especially true when a child has been out sick or something difficult has happened at home or school. But when a child refuses school and you don’t know why, it’s time to look deeper. It could be an academic challenge or a social struggle, bullying, or anxiety.

Before a day here and there turns into a long string of missed classes, start talking about it with your child. A coach can help get to the root of the avoidance and build confidence again. They can also help smooth the transition back to class, even after an extended absence.

Self-esteem

Your child’s inner voice is confident on some days (“I can do that!”) and less so on others (“Why even try?”). Comparisons to other kids can chip away at their self-esteem. So can bullying, getting embarrassed at school, or not being picked for the team.

Everyone struggles sometimes. But harsh criticism, self-doubt, or lack of confidence can affect your child’s ability to try new things, make friends, or perform at school. Noticing patterns, learning positive self-talk, and surrounding themselves with people who believe in them all make a difference.

Social skills

Kids all want to feel like they belong. But even for the most confident kids, making friends isn’t always easy. Learning how to read social cues, start conversations, or really listen to others are skills that can be learned.

Social skills start at home. You can model empathy, kindness, and respect at home. And your child can practice taking turns, sharing, and learning to connect (“Hi, can I play, too?”) with you first, before trying with others.
