Affirming and supporting your child’s self-discovery
Raising your child is an evolving, lifelong process. It can be emotional, joyful, confusing, and overwhelming all at once. As your child discovers who they are and their place in the world, one thing stays constant: your love and advocacy matter more than anything.
Every child’s identity unfolds in its own time. Along the way, you might face situations that have you wondering if you’re doing the right thing. Stay curious and surround yourself with the same support you give your child. We’re here to help walk you through.

Gender identity
Gender identity is a person’s inner sense of being a boy, a girl, both, neither, or something else. It’s about how someone understands themselves on the inside. It’s different from gender expression and sexual identity or orientation.
Understanding different gender identities and what your child is going through as they try to know themselves is important. We can help your conversations with your child feel more open and comfortable. Coaching can give you the support you need to create safe spaces where your child can be themselves.

Racial & ethnic identity
At some point, most kids begin to notice differences in themselves, their family, and their friends. Questions about racial and ethnic identity are a healthy part of growing up. For some kids, those questions come up more often, especially if they experience bias, cultural differences, or a feeling like they don’t know where they fit.
Exploring racial and ethnic identity as a family can be a powerful source of strength and pride. Knowing about the values, traditions, and heritage that makes your child’s family unique also helps build self-esteem and confidence.

Sexual identity
Sexual identity usually refers to a preferred “label” (like gay, straight, or bisexual). For kids ages 0–12, conversations about sexuality and sexual identity might be more about curiosity. Even if your child hasn’t ever had a relationship with another person, they are still able to learn about their own feelings and desires.
Keeping your home a safe space, setting healthy boundaries, and getting familiar with LGTBQ+ terminology are all great ways to support a child exploring their sexual identity. We can help show you how.

Sex & dating
As kids grow, they are exposed to all kinds of information and situations. Especially in a digital world. They might get curious about why a friend has two mommies, where adopted babies come from, or how their little sister actually got here. You may not know how to answer some of their questions honestly.
Curiosity about how bodies work, how babies are made, and how love is found are all natural. Your child might be looking for reassurance, clarity, or biological facts. Or, they might be asking because they are seeing, hearing about, or feeling their own natural desires grow. We can help you keep these conversations open, calm, and age-appropriate.
