# Keeping kids safe online can be complicated

**Para las familias**

Most kids today are on screens at some point every single day. For younger kids, it could be 30 minutes of a show they enjoy. For others, it’s woven throughout their days and nights. They’re on computers in class, watching and making videos, or gaming with friends on the weekends. Even toddlers understand how to tap and swipe.

Being online helps kids learn, builds curiosity, and keeps them connected to faraway people and places. It can also negatively affect their mood, focus, and self-esteem. When they understand how to balance the use of technology, their whole life — especially when they’re unplugged — comes back into focus.

## Cyberbullying

If your child can get online, they can get bullied online. In fact, one in five preteens say they’ve seen it, done it, or been a target themselves.

Kids are spending more time than ever on apps, games, and social platforms. They’re often interacting with friends — and strangers — with no adult eyes anywhere near them. Most won’t come to you when something goes wrong. And if they create content or live-stream, the risk of cyberbullying skyrockets. So, what can you do about it?

## Internet safety

Looking up definitions of words. Researching topics for a report. Finding statistics. Downloading new games. Sending emails and DMs. Kids (and adults) are on the internet doing innocent tasks all the time. And being online means learning how to use devices, platforms, apps, and other online spaces in ways that keep your family safe.

It’s not just about dangerous content. It’s about protecting your child’s emotional well-being, self-esteem, and sleep patterns. It’s about holding onto your family’s privacy and your child’s in-person relationships. Let’s talk about how to do just that.

## Screen time

In reasonable doses, screen time isn’t the enemy. It helps kids stay connected, learn fast, and yes, enjoy endless puppy videos. From video games to social media scrolling, family movie nights to online homework, screens are everywhere.

Screens aren’t the enemy. But too much of anything isn’t good for anyone. And, there’s a catch: screens and sleep don’t mix well. The blue light from devices blocks melatonin, which is the hormone that tells the brain it’s time to wind down. The result? Kids struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up rested.

Nobody has to give up screens entirely. But a few changes and things to be aware of can make a big difference for your child.

## Social media

Kids are using social media to document their lives, express themselves, and connect with others. Depending on their age, being on social media can play a big role in your child’s life. It’s part of how they communicate, build relationships, and discover who they want (or don’t want) to be.

Consuming too much of the wrong content can damage self-esteem. And, the right content can also inspire creativity, curiosity, and identity development. So, keep the risks in mind while striving for open communication and balance. At the same time, recognize the upsides for your child — it makes it easier to set boundaries and find common ground.
