# ND 1-2-3: Summer strategies for neurodivergent kids

*By Brightline Team*

**Our quick-read guide is written especially for parents of neurodiverse kids.** It’s meant to help caregivers apply our weekly blog topic in a different way, one that works for their child’s unique brain.

Yes, some kids thrive on routine, structure, and predictability. But the school year can take a big toll on a neurodivergent nervous system. Months of masking to fit in, sensory overload, and social exhaustion means when summer gets here, neurodivergent kids need the break.

## Unstructured, unplugged time isn’t just a reset from school work.

It’s essential that your ND child has time to decompress once the final school bell rings. Summer strategies for neurodivergent kids might look a little different.

## Here’s the 1-2-3:

- **Lower demands:** For a short window, drop the tight schedules packed with activities. Give your child permission to do “nothing.” When you lower environmental demands, you give your child a chance to let go of the sensory and cognitive fatigue of the school year.
- **Swap screens for sensory play:** Don’t just take away devices. They may not figure out something else to do on their own. Instead, offer high-sensory, open-ended alternatives. Fill a bin on the porch with water beads. Make a fort. Lay in the grass to watch clouds or sing to the dog. Without a screen or a strict rulebook, their brains transition into self-directed, creative play.
- **Provide a loose framework:** Knowing what to expect (even a little) helps reduce meltdowns. The body loves a plan. And lots of ND kids don’t know what to do with “open” time. A loose framework might look like mornings at home, afternoons outside, evenings with family. Let them fill in some blanks as the days go by.

## The takeaway: Summer strategies for neurodivergent kids don’t have to be complicated.

Remember, boredom breeds creativity. It can also build curiosity and help them feel grounded. So let your child spend the better part of a week lining up their toys or surrounding themselves with pillows and blankets. They aren’t wasting summer — they’re resetting their battery.
